Formally established over twenty years ago, as part of the Masters in Engineering (MEng) course at the University of Cambridge, students are required to complete a minimum of six weeks relevant industrial experience by the end of their third year of study.
As an essential course component, the Industrial Placements office exists to administer and validate this requirement, supporting over 1,200 students every year.
The team has two core functions:
Student support and engagement
The Industrial Placements office acts in many ways as the departments inhouse careers service. With expertise in early careers recruitment and academic administration, we offer advice and guidance to the student body on a multitude of topics - from how to structure CVs and prepare for interviews, to professional etiquette during time on placement and maintaining an active professional network. We are support and in turn support the Safety Office at the Department of Engineering by ensuring all necessary safeguarding and risk assessment criteria is completed in a timely manner.
Industry links
The office maintains close links with organisations across the globe that offer suitable, engineering related industrial experience. With a focus on raising company profiles within the student body, partnering with the Industrial Placements office can offer access to a vibrant pool of undergraduate talent across the broad scope of engineering. The office is responsible to curating an internal programme of engagement with external partners, leading to industry led workshops, insight days and much more.
